Boone Lake General Information:
-
Boone Lake is nearly 33 miles long,
covers approximately 4,300 acres at normal summer pool, has
approximately 130 miles of shoreline and collects rainfall runoff from
a 1,840 square-mile watershed.
-
Named for the pioneer explorer Daniel
Boone, Boone Dam impounds the South Fork Holston River for power
generation, flood control and other obligations of TVA.
-
Surrounded by Kingsport, Johnson City
and Bristol, the 4,300-acre Boone Lake is in Sullivan and Washington
Counties in Northeast Tennessee.
-
The lake was created in 1952 with the
completion of the 1,640-foot long, 160-foot high Boone Dam.
-
In addition to providing water to
generate electrical power at the dam's three generation units, Boone
Lake is an important part of TVA's integrated regional flood control
system. This accounts for the fluctuation of water levels during the
year.
-
Boone has a normal summer pool
elevation of 1384, and a minimum winter pool elevation of 1330 feet.
Typical winter drawdown is to elevation of 1358.
